William "Bill" Joseph Fichter, son of Leonard and Hazel (Young) Fichter, was born in their family home on the farm south of Randolph, Iowa on January 9, 1926. Following a lengthy battle with cancer Bill entered into the arms of his Lord at his home on October 8, 2012 on the same family farm where he was born .
Bill grew up on the family farm attending the Randolph Public Schools, graduating from Randolph High School in 1943. Following graduation, he farmed with his father and worked at the Dekalb Seed Corn Company, where he worked nights at the plant in Shenandoah and was employed in numerous other positions.
On October 8, 1950 Bill was united in marriage to Alena Ross at the Randolph Methodist Church. To this union two children, JoEllen and Mark were born. In 1951, Bill entered the Army. After advanced infantry training at Fort Riley, Kansas, he served with the 1st Division, 26th Infantry, Army Regiment in Germany. While in the Army he was a member of the Blue Spaders. He was also a member of the 1st Team Division Champion Army, Skeet Team receiving the trophy. In November of 1953, he returned to the Randolph area to farm and raise his family with Alena.
Bill was a member of the Randolph Methodist Church his whole life. He served in various positions within the church. He was a member of the Shenandoah American Legion Post #88 and Tabor V.F.W. Post #7064. Bill and Alena enjoyed golfing and traveled extensively. They enjoyed their travels to visit family and friends. Everyone enjoyed Bill's sense of humor and wit. He also enjoyed hunting.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 62 years Alena; daughter JoEllen (Lauren) Heermann of Haxtun, CO; son Mark (Benita) Fichter of Randolph, IA; seven grandchildren Jenna (Christian) Keller of Steamboat Springs, CO, Will (Brittany) Heermann of Ridgecrest, CA, John Heermann of Loveland, CO, Sterling (Christina) Fichter of St. Joseph, MO, Jeremiah Fichter of Lincoln, NE, MaryAmelia Fichter of Liberty, MO and Isaac Fichter of Randolph, IA; three great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Lowell Fichter.
