Obituary

Wayne Howard Peterson, son of Joseph R. and Mildred E. (Skalberg) Peterson, was born on June 14, 1920, near Essex, Iowa. He passed away on Friday, December 28, 2007, at the Clarinda Regional Health Center at the age of 87.

Wayne received his early education from Goldenrod Country School near Essex. He worked and lived on the family farm until entering the Army in 1942. During World War II, he served in the European Theater. Upon his return home from the war in 1945, Wayne returned to farming and raising hogs in Montgomery and Page County for the next 60 years.

On December 14, 1949, Wayne was united in marriage to Evelyn Mae Stearns at the Gravity, Iowa, parsonage. Following their marriage, they farmed near Nyman until 1960 when they moved to their present residence north of Coin. Wayne and Evelyn raised three children, Stephen, Kendall and Patricia.

Wayne was baptized and confirmed at the Swedish Mission Covenant Church. He enjoyed farming and improving his land by building terraces with his bulldozer. In 1997 Wayne was awarded the Page County Soil Stewardship award. When he wasn't outside, he enjoyed reading and looked forward to playing cards with friends and neighbors.

Preceding Wayne in death were his parents, Joe and Mildred Peterson; wife, Evelyn; brother, Wendell Peterson; brother-in-law, Aubrey Berry; and one great grandson.

Survivors include his children, Stephen Peterson and his wife Anna of St. Joseph, MO, Kendall Peterson and his wife Shirley of Coin, IA, and Patricia Vogel and her husband Alan of Coin, IA; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; sister, Leatrice Berry of Blooming Grove, TX; sister-in-law, Millie Peterson of Shenandoah, IA; other relatives and many friends.

Private burial services were held on Monday, December 31, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. from the Polsley Cemetery in rural Lincoln Twp., Coin, Iowa. Words of Comfort were given by Rev. Trevor Skalberg. The Musical Selection for the service was "Amazing Grace". Casket Bearers were Andy Peterson, Joe Peterson, Max Vogel, Trevor Farr, Mitchell Peterson, and Dave Wilmes. Interment was in Polsley Cemetery. Memorials are being directed to the Polsley Cemetery.
