Viola Mae (DeWitt) McDermott was born on November 19, 1919 in Farmingdale, Illinois, the daughter of James and Chloe Viola (Walker) DeWitt. Viola entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at the Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa.
Viola's early years were spent in Chillicothe, Missouri where she attended school and graduated with the Class of 1937. She later made her residence in Long Beach, California before moving to Shenandoah. She was united in marriage to Bob Stotts. The couple later divorced.
Viola later found happiness with her marriage to Ernie McDermott. She worked as a cook for several local restaurants including A&W Rootbeer, The Country Club and the Tall Corn. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Some of her interests included gardening, cooking and sewing. She was a lovely and caring lady, who will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest "Ernie" McDermott and her parents.
Those left to honor her memory include her children; Judy Cook of Shenandoah, Roberta Craig and husband Eddie of Council Bluffs, Kenneth R. Stotts and special friend Jane Uehling of Omaha, James Stotts and wife Josiane of Glenwood; grandchildren; Kenneth Stotts, Jr., Tammy Kenny, Misty Radil, Eddie Craig, Candi Cook, Matt Cook, Robert Stotts and Shawna Stotts; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at St. Mary' Catholic Church with Father Vern Smith celebrating the mass. Attending to the memorial register was Connie Butcher, while Dr. Pat Emge served as an usher. Special music for the service was led by Jane Emge with Mary Beth Gowing playing the organ. Hilda Mattern served as the Lector. Casket Bearers included Eddie Craig, Matt Cook, Bob Radil, Jim Stotts, Kenneth Stotts, Sr. and Bob Stotts. Honorary Casket Bearers were David Kenny, Dennis Mastny and Ed Craig. Burial followed in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Rural Imogene, Iowa. A luncheon followed in the Burial at St. Mary's Parish Hall.
