Vince Valentine long time Shenandoah resident entered into eternal rest on October 17, 2012 at Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah Iowa. Vince was born on April 25, 1925 in Red Oak, Iowa to Ada (Miller) and Loyd Valentine.
Vince grew up in Red Oak and Atlantic, Iowa or wherever his father could find work, with his siblings Arminta and Jean. While growing up in Atlantic he played high school basketball until he quit school at the age of 18.
He then went to work for Olson's Grocery. When he was 19 he was drafted into the United States Army where he participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was promoted to Sergeant. Vince was very proud of the time he served in the Army. Upon his discharge from the Army, Vince returned to Atlantic, Iowa. He worked for Olson's Grocery until he took a job with the highway department for 3 years before moving to Shenandoah. Vince worked at the Evening Sentinel for more than 35 years. While working for the Evening Sentinel, Vince bowled in a league every Friday night at Tebbes Lanes. He found that he was quite an accomplished bowler, bowling his way into the Iowa State Bowling Hall of Fame.
In 1949 Vince married Dorothy Bryant and started his family with the birth of Janice and David which ended in divorce after 20 plus years. In 1973 Vince was lucky enough to find Doris McCollum and continued adding to his family with Lorrie, Susan, Royal and Tom.
Vince never met a stranger and was always willing to help anyone in need. He enjoyed working in the garden, bowling, photography, camping and last be not least his family.
Vince was preceded in death by his parents Ada and Loyd Valentine, sister Arminta Swanson, second wife Doris and son David Valentine. Left to cherish his memory are his sister Jean Snow of Shenandoah, IA, his daughters; Janice Page (Howard) of Colorado Springs, CO, Lorrie Mundell (Fred) of Wamego, KS and Susan Barnes (Jeff Knutson) of Griswold, IA; and sons, Royal McCollum of Tabor, IA and Tom McCollum (Barbara) of Coin, Iowa and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
