Stephen Gerard Hughes the son of Francis and Catherine Maher Hughes, was born on July 10, 1955 at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa and entered into rest on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa at the age of 60 years, 5 months, and 29 days.
Stephen spent the first 9 years of his life with his parents and siblings on a farm in Fremont County, Iowa. At the age of 10 he moved to the Glenwood Resource Center , where he remained the rest of his life.
Stephen loved life! Some of his joys in life were, music, being with family, going to weekly mass, working so he would get his payday money, watching football, playing pool, checkers, card games and Pepsi. Being involved in Special Olympics and winning those all important Blue Ribbons seem to make his life complete.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Catherine Hughes, and a brother Jerry Hughes.
Survivors include his sister, Mary Rose (Phil) Gillett of Council Bluffs, IA, sister-in-law, Jan Hughes of Council Bluffs, IA, brother, John (Beth) Hughes of Colorado Springs, CO, brother, Jim (Monica) Hughes of Glenwood, IA, brother, Mike (Jody) Hughes of Council Bluffs, IA, sister, Theresa (Denny) Kemp of Wilmore, KY, brother, Bernie Hughes of Randolph, IA, sister, Ruth (Ed) Spencer of BeeBee Town, IA, brother, Raymond (Lynette) Hughes of Omaha, NE and sister, Rita (Paul) Whannell of Glenwood, IA, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Memorials may be directed to the Special Olympics.
Burial will be held at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Imogene, Iowa.
