Ruth passed away on Friday, August 10, 2018 at her home in Shenandoah, Iowa.
Ruth Diane (Workentine) Freed died and passed on to be with her Savior and Lord Jesus Christ on August 10, 2018. Ruth was born on November 19, 1956, daughter of Lloyd David Workentine and Beatrice Lorene (Kitchin) Workentine in Albany, Oregon. The family moved to Three Hills, Alberta, Canada and grew up on or near the campus of Prairie Bible Institute.
Ruth graduated from Prairie High School in 1974 and from Prairie Bible Institute in 1977 with a Bachelor of Religious Education degree. She served as a secretary for the Prairie Elementary School before becoming a missionary with The Evangelical Alliance Mission (TEAM) to an orphanage and church planting work in Baja California Sur, Mexico in 1984. While in Mexico she met her husband-to-be and was married to Marvin Freed on December 15, 1984 in Three Hills, Alberta.
After getting married, the couple lived in Shenandoah, Iowa for most of 1985, then traveled to Three Hills, Alberta while Marvin took a year of Bible study and their oldest son, Jonathan, was born on graduation day. They moved back to Shenandoah, Iowa and their second son, Timothy, was later born. In the following years, Ruth did various types of work including some in-home baby-sitting, served as a cook at a daycare center, was the Director of the Hispanic Center, and a receptionist/office assistant for the KYFR radio station.
Ruth was an active church member at First Baptist Church, then later at Memorial Baptist Church which became Christ Point Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher and where needed on committees, VBS and serving fellowship coffees and meals.
Everybody loved "Ruthie" and Ruth loved everyone. Ruth was well known for her love for Jesus and her family and friends, as well as her heart of kindness. From cinnamon rolls, to chocolate brownies, to sloppy joes, Ruth was an excellent cook. However, she is probably most remembered for her homemade tortillas and Mexican meals.
Ruth was proceeded in death by her parents and by her step-mother Emily (Booher) Workentine, sister Bonnie Zerbe, and father-in-law Leslie Freed.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Marvin Freed; sons Jonathan Freed and Timothy (Kathryn) Freed, all of Shenandoah, Iowa; brothers David Workentine and Paul (Ruth) Workentine, all of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and brother-in-law Ken Zerbe of Wolf Point, Montana; mother-in-law ConaMara Freed of rural Clarinda, Iowa; brothers-in-law Michael (Sheila) Freed of rural Essex, Iowa, and Ed (Nicole) Freed of Dubuque, Iowa; sister-in-law Melanie (Reggie) Drake of Wilton, Iowa and grandsons Tyler Freed and Derek Goodson; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
