Obituary

Richard Allen Stanley, son of Leroy Franklin and Lola Mae (Cox) Stanley, was born on March 13, 1943, in Shenandoah, Iowa. Richard was raised in Shenandoah, where he attended Shenandoah Public Schools. On January 23, 1966, he was united in marriage to Shirley Jean Demanett at the Fremont Covenant Church in Essex, Iowa. Richard passed away peacefully on July 20, 2021, at his home in Shenandoah, Iowa.

Richard worked for the City of Shenandoah from 1964 to 2003. He started as the Street Department Supervisor for 20 years, and then worked in the maintenance department for the remaining years. After retiring in 2003, he operated the city street sweeper for years, finally fully retiring in 2018. He loved spending time with his family, friends and grandchildren. When his grandchildren were visiting, you could find him making pancakes, which had generous amounts of colorful sprinkles and chocolate chips. You could always find a smile on his face and he couldn't ever pass up a witty joke when opportunity struck. He enjoyed working on small engines, cars, electronic items and he loved his coffee. He also enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, and walking his son's dogs, Lady and Sophie.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Lola Mae Stanley, brother, Robert Stanley and son, Michael Stanley. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Shirley Stanley of Shenandoah; sons, Jeff Stanley of Pella, IA and Corey Stanley and wife Tammy of Clarinda, IA; grandchildren, Drew Stanley of Fort Collins, CO, Bailey Vial and husband Andy of Red Oak, IA, Hannah Stanley of Ames, IA, Cooper Stanley of Ames, IA, Brittany Smith and husband Kyle of Amazonia, MO, Oren Keller of Clarinda, IA and Laura Hartman of Coin, IA; one great-grandson Oliver Stanley of Fort Collins, CO; sister, Shirley Dorl of Shenandoah, IA; brothers Jerry Stanley and wife Karon of Red Oak, IA and Ronald Stanley of Platteville, CO; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.
