Philip Quentin Gibson was born on October 5, 1921 on a farm near Blanchard, Iowa. He was the youngest of six children born to Elmer and Estella (Hoskins) Gibson. He died Sunday, September 10, 2006. Quentin attended a rural school near Blanchard until the family moved to the Coin, Iowa area. He graduated from Coin Consolidated School in 1939. He attended Iowa State University until he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served as a Pharmacist's Mate on a Landing Craft Infantry ship and participated in the Normandy invasion during World War II.

Quentin was united in marriage to Arlene Sulser on January 20, 1945 at her parent's home near Coin, Iowa. When the war ended, they returned to the family farm home north of Coin, where they lived together for over 60 years. Quentin started his long-time farming career on what is now an Iowa Century Farm. Because of his deep value for soil conservation, he installed miles of terraces, building many of them with his own equipment. He received the Emmett Zollars award from the Page County Conservation Commission, and the Firestone Soil Conservation Award. He served on the school boards of the Coin Consolidated School District and the South Page Community School District. He was an elder, trustee and Sunday School teacher of the Coin Presbyterian Church, and served as an elder, a youth group leader and mentor for several youth of the Shenandoah Presbyterian Church. He led the Lincoln Leaders 4-H Club. He derived great enjoyment from a good game of golf, and learned to ski at age 59. He was in his element visiting and interacting with people from all walks of life.

Preceding Quentin in death were his parents, brother and sister-in-law Jerome and Verna (Turnbull) Gibson, sister and brother-in-law Esther and Richard Murphy, sister and brother-in-law Marjorie and Paul Lavely, brother Everett Gibson, sister Rachel Murphy, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Ina Mae (Sulser) and Lawrence Wolfe, and brother-in-law Dale Brownlee.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene, his son Philip and wife Mary Anne (McKinley) Gibson of Coin, IA, his daughter Rita and husband Bill Gilmore of Clarinda, IA, and his son Mark Gibson and fiance Rosa O'Leary of Glenwood Springs, CO; granddaughter Sarah (Gibson) Rhoten and husband Jay of Pella, IA, grandson Van and wife Molly (Driftmier) Gilmore of Palmyra, MO; and great-granddaughters Skye and Sienna Rhoten of Pella, IA; sisters-in-law, Ruth (Blessing) Gibson and Anna (Sulser) Brownlee; many very special nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; and a host of friends, young and old.

Celebration of life memorial services were held on Friday, September 15, 2006, at 11:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. Rick Sleyster. Organist was Terry Stafford. Special music was performed by Jim Dunbar. Caring for the flowers were Phyllis Craig and Muriel Baldwin. Attending the memory register were Marilyn Benson, Chrystal Johnson and Kathy Harris. Ushers were Tom Brodersen, Don Nelson, Lynn Baldwin and C. E. Hornbuckle. Presentation of the flag was accorded by the Shenandoah American Legion Post #88. Inurnment was in the Elmwood Cemetery at Coin, prior to the memorial service. Memorials are being directed to the First Presbyterian Church, Coin Meal Site, or to the charity of the donor's choice. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
