Pauline Knox Johnson was born to Robert R. Knox and Leona (North) Knox on May 16, 1916, in Essex, Iowa. She passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2008, at the Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa, at 92 years of age.

When Pauline was four years old, the family moved from Essex to the Knox family farm northwest of Essex. She attended Windy Summit country school and graduated from Essex High School in 1933.

In 1938, Pauline was united in marriage to Harold (Barney) Johnson. To this union two children were born: son, Robert and daughter, JoEllen.

As a young woman, Pauline worked at the Earl May Seed Company offices in Shenandoah and was trained as a seed analyst. After ten years in that position, she resigned to keep the books for her husband's trucking business. In 1959, she took a position as Secretary to the Superintendent of Essex Community Schools. She retired from that position after twenty-five years in 1984.

Pauline was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Essex, the Tomorrow's Club of Essex, the Windy Summit Birthday Club, and served as Secretary and Treasurer for the Essex Public Library for fifty years. In 2006, she was honored to serve as the Grand Marshall of the Essex Labor Day parade. She enjoyed playing bridge, other card games, and in later years, Rummy Cube with friends and family.

Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and many friends. She is survived by her son Robert (Bob) Johnson and his wife Alicia of Nixa, Missouri; her daughter JoEllen (Johnson) Strittmatter of Darien, Illinois; step-grandchildren Nathan and Rachel Averett of Springfield, Missouri; brothers-in-law Lynn Johnson and his wife Mary Lou of Essex, Raymond Johnson and his wife Janet of Long Beach, California; sister-in-law Willa Mae and her husband Richard Hampton of Payette, Idaho; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, June 25 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Essex, Iowa. Words of comfort were given by Pastor Mark Woldruff and Pastor Jerry Lamb. Special music was "Amazing Grace", "In The Garden" and "Mansion Over The Hilltop". Cocalists were Amy Samuelson and Bob Salmon. Organist was Pat Tillman. Dorothy Holmes and Elaine Lindburg attended the memory register. Mary Lou Johnson cared for flowers. Ushers were John Bengston and Glen Confer. Honorary casket bearers were Terry Johnson, Dick Johnson, Harve Johnson, Lynn Johnson, Howie Johnson, Tom Johnson and Darwin Holmes. Inurnment was in Essex Cemetery in Essex, Iowa.
