Maurice Frank Hoxie, son of Frank, Jr. and Carolyn (Kent) Hoxie, was born on April 30, 1926 in Shenandoah. He entered into the arms of his Lord on Friday, January 16, 2015.

Maurice grew up on the family farm and attended rural school until he entered junior high school in Shenandoah. He graduated with the Class of 1944 and attended Iowa State University before enlisting in the United States Navy on his 18th birthday.

Maurice served in the Pacific theatre during World War II. When he returned home after the war, he renewed a friendship with Betty Heard and they were married on August 17, 1947. There were two children, Judith Anne and Maurice Kent born to this union. Maurice and Betty were married almost 62 years. He worked for the Weather Bureau for several years after their marriage then they returned home in 1950 to begin farming.

Maurice was a member of the First United Methodist Church all of his life and served as an usher. He and Betty were the adult leaders of the MYF for several years. He was also a 68 year member of the American Legion, a Past Commander of the American Legion, and a 49 year member of the Color Guard. He was a member of the Elks, Kiwanis, Farm Bureau, Farmers Coop, Central Stated Archeological Society, and the Shenandoah and Fremont County Historical Societies. He enjoyed collecting American Indian artifacts and studying the life of the Plains Indians. He also enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Maurice was preceded in death by his wife Betty, his parents and a nephew, Bruce Hoxie.

Those left to cherish his memory include son, Kent and fiance Sandy Bertelsen; daughter, Judy Lorimor and husband Gary; grandchildren, David Lorimor and wife Kristen, Nathan Lorimor, Sarah Lorimor and husband William Canestaro and Rachel Beaudoin and husband Christopher; beloved great-grandchildren, William and John Lorimor, Delilah, Graham and Sybil Canestaro, and Liam Beaudoin; brother Wayne Hoxie and wife Martha; nephew Scott Hoxie and wife Kim and their daughters Brooke and Alexis, along with other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church of Shenandoah, The American Legion Post 88 of Shenandoah or the Shenandoah Public Library.

Burials will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah with military rites provided by American Legion Post 88 of Shenandoah.
