Mary Gertrude (Laughlin) Lightfoot was born on October 7, 1922 in Imogene, Iowa, the daughter of Martin William and Mary Gertrude (McGarry) Laughlin.  Mary entered into eternal peace on Thursday, March 3, 2022 in Shenandoah, Iowa at the blessed age of 99 years.

All of her early life was spent on her family's farm just west of Imogene.  She attended St. Patrick's Academy for all of her schooling and graduated with a class of four on May 26, 1940.   Mary and Vern L Lightfoot were married on February 2, 1948 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Imogene.  Vern and Mary lived and farmed west of Shenandoah. Mary worked in the offices of  Lake's Nursery prior to her marriage and Henry Field's  for a short time during marriage.

Vern and Mary had a passion for traveling and were proud of being able to visit 43 of the 50 states.  In the early 1980's Vern and Mary were named WOWT Farm Family of the Week, an accomplishment they were quite proud of.  She was a 4-H leader for many years, inducted with Vern into the 4-H Hall of Fame in 2010, was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and St. Mary's Women's Guild, enjoyed a women's bridge club and a neighborhood women's group called "Our Night Out".  She was a  volunteer at Hand Hospital as a member of the ladies auxiliary. She brought the Eucharist to shut-in's and those at the care centers.  Sewing, quilting, crocheting, embroidery, baking, gardening, reading non-fiction were all interests that kept Mary's days busy.  Mary also enjoyed brightening people's day by sending cards.  Whether it be a birthday, anniversary or at Christmas time friends and family could expect receiving a card in the mail.    Her address book is a family treasure.

She was preceded in death by her parent's, husband, an infant son, brothers Ralph and William "Billy" Laughlin and  grandson Kevin Frank.  Those left to cherish her memory include her son Robert (Kathy) Lightfoot of Shenandoah, Iowa, daughters Rita (Larry) Frank of Lake City, Iowa, Janet (Richard) Hare of Hollister, MO, and Theresa (Kurt) Rowan of Bedford, Iowa., eleven grandchildren, Amy (Chris) Rueber of Hudson, Iowa, Brian (Natalie) Frank of Mission Hills, KS, Eric Frank of Carroll, Iowa, Erin (Tyler) Toomsen of Ackley, Iowa, Todd (Sarah) Hare of Zurich, Switzerland, Tom ( Elizabeth) Hare of St. Louis, MO, Ryan Hare of Grand Island, NE, Trisha (John) Gawley, Ralston, NE, Sr. Faustina Lightfoot of Waverly, NE, Troy (Harly) Rowan of Maryville, TN, Kyle Rowan of Dubuque, Iowa.  11 great grandchildren (number 12 due in June), many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
