Lyle's early years were spent on the family farm in Northboro. During his high school years in Northboro Lyle was active in basketball and track. Lyle was later drafted into the United States Army where he served his country with pride in the Marshall Islands. He was honorably discharged in 1956.

In August of 1956 he was united in marriage to Nancy Offerbacker. Their marriage was blessed with the birth of two children, Kimberly and Kerk. The couple lived and farmed in Northboro and later in Kellogg, IA for several years following their marriage.

He started Tri-State Helicopter service in Shenandoah where he did crop-dusting, aerial photography and power/pipeline patrol. He later moved to the Lake of the Ozarks where he gave tours of Bagnell Dam. He later moved to Omaha where he became an instructor and flew traffic patrol for KFAB Eye in the Sky and did traffic reporting for all three television stations. Lyle continued to farm in Northboro until 2000. He then moved to Sun Lakes, AZ for a short time and returned to Omaha to live with his sister Doris until recently.

Lyle was a member of the Elks Club and the VFW. Some of his passions included farming, flying, making people laugh and he always enjoyed having coffee with the boys.
