Louis "Dean" Carper passed from this earth into the arms of his heavenly father on Saturday, September 27.

Dean was born on April 10th, 1931 in Page county Iowa to Walter and Muzette (Montgomery) Carper. He attended school in Shenandoah where he graduated in 1951. In May of 1951 he enlisted in the US Army. On November 23rd he married his high school sweetheart, Charlotte Billings. Dean proudly served his country in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in June, 1953, but served in the U.S. Army Reserves in Shenandoah for thirteen more years.

Dean went back to school and graduated from NWMSU with his undergraduate degree in Secondary Education. Dean taught Social Studies for three years at Eddyville Community School. They then moved to Red Oak where he was instrumental in starting the Special Education program. Dean continued his education and received his Master's degree in Special Education from University of Nebraska at Omaha. He retired from teaching in June, 1993. He dedicated his life to his special kids. For many years he started and ran Camp Discovery. He also, worked with Special Olympics for many years.

Other than education Dean's passion was working for the Lord. He served in many positions in his church, The Community of Christ. Most recently he served as Evangelist.

Dean also, had a passion for writing. He wrote and published three books about young people: A Cry in the Wind, The Sound of Drums, and Gib. He had various other manuscripts that were "in the works".

Dean's family was his life also. He and Charlotte raised three children, Jeff, Cindy and Angie. They enjoyed wintering in Arizona for many years. He loved to play golf, read Civil War history and talking to people.

Dean is survived by his wife of 62 years, Charlotte of Council Bluffs. His children, Jeff Carper of Glenwood, Cindy Sellers and husband, Art of Council Bluffs, and Angie Dunkeson of Forest Grove, Oregon. Grandchildren: Aaron Sellers of Coralville, Iowa, Eric Sellers and wife Liz of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Second Lt. Andrew Carper of Eglin AFB, Florida, Christain Carper and wife Abby of Glenwood, Iowa, Tonya, Zoie, and Cole Dunkeson of Cornelius, Oregon. Great granddaughter, Hannah Sellers of Council Bluffs. Many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
