Lois Mary Smith Miller, daughter of Oscar J. and Frances C. (McAllister) Hurst, was born on May 23, 1916, at Tarkio, Missouri. She passed away on Monday, January 8, 2007, at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 90. Growing up on a farm southeast of Shenandoah, Lois attended country school through the eighth grade. She graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1934. Following high school, Lois worked for Attorneys, Barnes and Howard, for two years. On October 18, 1936, Lois was united in marriage to Willis C. Smith at the home of her parents near Shenandoah. Following their marriage they lived in Missouri, later moving to Peru, Nebraska, where she worked for three professors as secretary for eight years. They moved to Coin, Iowa for a short time and then to Hamburg, before settling in Shenandoah where Willis died in 1988. In 1991, Lois was united in marriage to Harry L. Miller at Summit Methodist Church. They made their home in Farragut and enjoyed seven years of marriage before he died in 1998. Lois was a member of the Tarkio United Methodist Church, Summit United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, the MS Club at Summit and the Farragut Congregational Church and their women's group. She participated in the Forest Park Sunday School Class and was a former member of Order of Eastern Star, Peru, Nebraska Chapter #58. Lois enjoyed crossword and word search puzzles along with writing and reading meaningful poems. She loved music, reading, traveling locally and writing articles for the local newspaper. Lois was grateful for the many friends she made during her stay at Forest Park Manor.

Preceding Lois in death were her parents; husband's, Willis Smith and Harry Miller; and son, W. James Smith; half-sister, Ethel Hurst. Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Sharon Smith of Homosassa, FL; grandchildren, Sharon Wendy Smith Gracy of Florida, W. James Smith II, and Stacey Elisa Smith of Florida; great grandchildren Chelsie Nicole Smith of Shenandoah, IA, Matthew Robert Gracy and Julia Elyse Gracy of Florida; and many cousins.

Celebration of life memorial services were held on Thursday, January 11, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by Pastor Fred Bryson. Special music was performed by Randy Erhart, who sang "One Day At A Time" and "Come, Thou Fount Of Every Blessing". Attending the memory register was Chelsie Smith. Inurnment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
