Larry G.
Young
Jul 7, 1951 — Mar 20, 2024
Essex
Larry Gene Young was born on July 7, 1951 in Red Oak, Iowa the son of Robert and Marice (Almquist) Young. Larry entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 doing a task which he had a true love for, which was farming.
Larry's early years were spent in the community of Essex. He graduated from Essex High School with the Class of 1969. He later went on to attend Iowa Western Community College for a year and then transferred to Wayne State College where he majored in Physical Education.
On December 17, 1977 he was united in marriage to Kelly Hansen at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shenandoah. This marriage was blessed with the birth of three sons; Toby, Andy and T.J. The family made their home in Essex. Larry held various jobs early on in life including working as a manager for Pizza Hut, Eaton Manufacturing and Howards Clothing. He decided to permanently pursue his passion for farming full time in 1976. A career which he was still actively invested in until his sudden passing.
Larry never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone. He enjoyed attending activities of his boys and later in life of his grandchildren. He served as Past President of the Essex Optimist Club, was a school board member for the Essex Community Schools for over 22 years where he served as President 3 separate times, and was a devoted member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shenandoah. Larry enjoyed playing cards, playing men's softball and most importantly spending time with his beloved family. He also enjoyed cheering on the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Marice Young; brother Steve Young and mother-in-law Maureen Hansen. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 46 years Kelly of Essex, sons, Tobias and wife Lora of Remsen, IA, Andrew and wife Christine Shaw of Bolton, CT and T.J. and wife Cortney of Shenandoah; grandchildren Jake, Sam and Beau Young of Bolton, CT, Zoe and Mya Young of Shenandoah and Mickayla and Mikey LaVoie of Bolton, CT; father-in-law Harold Hansen of Shenandoah; other relatives and a host of friends.
Memorials in Larry's name may be directed to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shenandoah or the Shenandoah Community Food Pantry.
