Judy passed away on Monday, December 19, 2022 at the Homestead Assisting Living in Shenandoah, Iowa.

Judith Ann Nelson was born May 10, 1938 in Shenandoah's Hand Hospital.  The daughter of J. Edwin and Mildred Rea (Ozenbaugh) Nelson, Judy spent her early years on a farm north of Shenandoah.  She attended Prospect Hill and Pleasant View country schools through eighth grade and graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1956.

Judy's entire professional career was with The Security Trust and Savings Bank/Bank Iowa in Shenandoah, beginning with part-time employment during her senior year of high school.  She was offered a full-time job after graduation, and spent 44  years, as one newspaper article wrote, "counting other people's money."  She held many different positions within the bank, retiring as Assistant Cashier in 2000.

As a member of Business and Professional Women, Judy held local, district and state offices.  She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was a church school teacher and member of the Session, acting as Clerk for several terms and serving on the Budget and Finance Committee.  She was the Treasurer of Presbyterian Women for many years.  Judy was also active in Southwest Iowa Pioneers, M.A.Y. Mentoring, The Shenandoah Music Association and a volunteer at the Shenandoah Food Pantry.

Judy loved the outdoors and preferred outside chores to inside ones.  That spurred her to participate in the Essex Whirlwinds 4-H Club (the boys' club) as well as the Pierce Pinnettes and Grant Pepperettes (girls' clubs).  She enjoyed working with and showing a beef steer and a dairy heifer at the Page County Fair.

Music was also an interest.  She learned to play the alto saxophone after joining the high school marching band and participating in that and the concert band all four years, thus setting an example for her two younger sisters.  That music interest and her attendance at early Civic Music concerts led her to join the board of the Shenandoah Music Association.

An interest in sports probably began in backyard work-up ball games.  She followed the Chicago Cubs and Bears, bowled with a local ladies team, traveling to several statewide tournaments, and spent many hours on the local golf course playing in the women's league.

Traveling was another hobby.  She visited many states, several World Fairs, and made two trips to Sweden and other Scandinavian countries.

Judy was always a supportive and encouraging influence in the lives of her siblings, nieces and nephew and grand nieces and nephews, attending family gatherings and activities as often as possible.

Judy died on December 19, 2022 under hospice care at Homestead from complications of Parkinson's Disease.  She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Joan Watterson, brother Don Nelson and other relatives.  She is survived by sisters Marilyn Nelson of Kansas City and Carol Hornbuckle (C.E.) of Shenandoah, nieces Jill Quinn (Mike) of Madisonville, KY, Judi Watterson Davis (Charlie) of Lenexa, KS, and Amanda Humiston (Kevin) of Parkville, MO, and nephew Brian Hornbuckle (Jalene) of Nevada, IA, great nieces Amy Quinn, Amaris and Eliana Hornbuckle, and Megan Humiston, and great nephews Barry Quinn (Abby) and Ryan Quinn (Alex), Malachi Hornbuckle and Ben Humiston.
