John Richard Miller, son of John Ross and Ruth E. (Hoskins) Miller, was born on January 31, 1932 in Clarinda, Iowa. He went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 peacefully passing away at his home in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 82.
Growing up, John was an only child, living with his parents and grandfather, Lewis Ellsworth Miller on a farm near Yorktown, Iowa. His mother was hospitalized when John was around seven years old. She remained hospitalized until her death when John was 13 years old. He later moved to Shenandoah with his father and grandfather. John lost both his father and grandfather by the time he turned 18.
In 1950, John was united marriage to Dorothy Lucille Cooper. In June of 1970, Dorothy passed away suddenly. In 1982, John met Sheila Jean Irvin and they were married at the River Walk in San Antonio, Texas in 1986.
John was employed at the Spot Caf in Shenandoah until he started his career with the Shenandoah US Post Office in 1955. He worked for a short while in the Hamburg Post Office and later became Post Master at Logan, Iowa.
During his early years John loved to fish and hunt. Golfing became his all time favorite sport. One of his fondest golfing experiences was being taken to the Masters by his youngest son, Steve, in Atlanta, Georgia. He loved music and dancing. He never missed a chance to dance with Sheila to the song "Good Hearted Woman". Sheila and John were able to travel to many different states, including Hawaii. One of their favorite places to spend the winter was in Apache Junction, Arizona.
Survivors include his wife, Sheila; six children, Danny Miller of Sidney, IA, Janet Hook of Shenandoah, IA, Michael Miller and wife Amy of Cookeville, TN, Steven Miller and wife Michelle of Atlanta, GA, Wendy Seddon and husband Mike of Creston, IA and Kizzie Wilson and husband Adam of Glenwood, IA; thirteen grandchildren, Danny's three daughters, Alyssa, Amity, and Rhema, Janet's four children, Debra, Nikki, Natalie and Brandon, Michael's three children, Eric John and Emma and Kizzie's three children, Samantha, Madyson and William. Also surviving are 14 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; a brother-in-law; three sister-in-laws; numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
John also leaves his "little doggie", Henry Hoover Miller, in the care of his wife, Sheila, and daughter, Janet.
John's smile, laugh, his sense of humor and hilarious stories are just some of the memories he gave to his family and friends.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by Pastor Marcia Barnett. Special music was "Good Hearted Woman" sung by George McGargill. Other musical selections were "Heaven Or Hell", "This Is My Father's World" and "When I Get To Where I Am Going". Attending the memory register was Charlotte Gibson. Honorary casket bearers were John Rogers, Howard Johnson, Chuck Irvin and Oren Irvin. Casket bearers were Ryan Norby, James Irvin, Wesley Stogdill, Sr., Wesley Stogdill, Jr., Chuck Binau and Marion Gulick. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Memorials in John's name are being directed to the People for Paws Organization in Shenandoah.
