James "Jim" W. Sligar, son of David and Ethel M. (Lord) Sligar, was born on January 10, 1925 in Fremont County, Iowa. He passed away on Monday, June 27, 2016 at Fair Oaks Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa.

Jim was inducted into the Army on September 14, 1943, served from October 5, 1943 to October 27, 1945. He landed on Omaha Beach on June 10, 1944, four days after D-Day. He was wounded and returned to the United States in April of 1945. He underwent surgery for his injuries and spent several months in a convalescent hospital, before receiving his discharge from the 23rd infantry regiment on October 27, 1945.

Jim was united in marriage to Julia D. Nims on April 23, 1947 at Champion Hill Presbyterian Church near Emerson, Iowa. They established their home in Shenandoah, and to this union one daughter, Denise Marie, was born.

A highlight took place in 1994, when Jim and Julia, accompanied by an Army buddy and his wife, Dave and Cora Soller, went to England. The four of them, along with English friends, visited many sites, including the military Cemetery and Omaha Beach where the men had served during World War II.

Jim was employed in Shenandoah at Home Oil Company, Mac Malloy Motor Company and DeKalb Research, the latter from 1953 to 1979. After leaving DeKalb he became self-employed, doing small carpentry jobs. He was employed part-time at Autumn Park and at the First United Methodist Church for a number of years; retiring from the latter in April of 1995. He also enjoyed helping his son-in-law on the farm when time would permit.

Jim was baptized and became a member of the First United Methodist Church of Shenandoah on April 10, 1949 and served as usher for 48 years, having received a plaque in 2009. He was a member of Men's Brotherhood for a number of years, has been a member of the American Legion Posts in both Sidney and Shenandoah, and a former member of the Color Guard of Shenandoah Post 88. He took great pride in assisting with the avenue of flags in Shenandoah. On May 5, 2009, he was honored to have been a part of the second Western Iowa Honor Flight to Washington D.C.

Jim was always very supportive of family, enjoyed times spent with his daughter, son-in-law and grandsons, attending many of the activities in which his family members were involved. Enjoyed so much the grandchildren and the times he was able to spend with them.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Carl M. Humbert, brother and sister -in-law Carl S. and Nina Sligar.

Jim is survived by his wife of 69 years, Julia Sligar, daughter Denise Tackett and husband Dave of Shenandoah, four grandsons Nathan Tackett and wife Tekyn of Grimes, IA, Kyle Tackett and wife Katie of Dillion, MT, Jordan Tackett and wife Lindsey of Ames, Iowa and Seth Tackett and wife Kristina of Wilmot, SD, great-grandchildren Sawyer, Garrett, Baker, Eli, Sloan and Mesa, sister Ilene Humbert of Shenandoah, brother Dave Sligar and wife Sandy of Hemmingford, NE, nieces Kay Bebout of Sidney and Tammie Carpenter and husband Randy of Shenandoah, nephew Richard Humbert of Shenandoah, other relatives and numerous friends.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church of Shenandoah or the Williams-Jobe-Gibson American Legion Post #128 of Sidney, Iowa.

Burial will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah with military rites by Williams-Jobe-Gibson American Legion Post #128 of Sidney, Iowa.
