James Doyle Hayhurst, son of James Orlie and Pearlie Esther (Elder) Hayhurst, was born on January 24, 1930 at Corydon, Iowa. He passed away on November 25, 2015 at Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa. He was 85 years, 10 months and 1 day old.

As a young boy, James lived in Promise City, Iowa, before moving to a farm north of Corydon, Iowa. He graduated from Corydon High School with the Class of 1948.

Following high school, James attended Iowa State University where he studied Vocational Agriculture for a year. In 1949, James went to work as a stone mason for B. Lammers in Corydon, as well as working as a farmhand, working both jobs until 1952.

On June 23, 1950, James was united in marriage to Dorothy Alice Perkins in Corydon. Following their marriage they resided in Corydon. James and Dorothy had two children, Paul and Patti.

On February 15, 1952, James was called into service of his country during the Korean War serving as a Unit Supply Specialist assigned to the Army's 3rd Battalion 31st Infantry and was honorably discharged on February 4, 1954, having attained the rank of Technical Sergeant. He received the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

After leaving the Army, James worked in Des Moines at Dahl's Grocery Store and then as a bread delivery man and a milkman. In 1960, they moved to Shenandoah, where he started his career as a "Jewel Tea" Salesman. He traveled many miles, serving his customers with their household products. He retired after 35 years of working. His beloved wife, Dorothy, passed away in 1981 and James then married Patricia White and later divorced.

Through the years, James enjoyed playing cards, gardening, cooking, fishing, hunting and traveling. He was always helping his neighbors and loved sharing his freshly baked bread. He attended many of his grandchildren's activities and was always there to help them when needed. James was member of the Shenandoah American Legion Post #88 and the United Methodist Church.

Preceding James in death were his parents; wife, Dorothy in 1981; sister, Ruby Carlson and infant sister, Amy Hayhurst; and two brothers, Gerald and Floyd. Survivors include his two children, Paul Hayhurst and wife Corinne of Midland, MI and Patti Rolf and husband Terry of Northboro, IA; sister, Donna Hayhurst of Des Moines, IA; four grandchildren, Allison Rolf and special friend Harold Coverdell of Wilmar, MN, Jennifer Baker and husband Jason of Des Moines, IA, Kimberly Hayhurst of East Lansing, MI and Andrew Rolf of Northboro, IA; two great granddaughters, Vivian and Nora Baker of Des Moines, IA; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
