Mooch was raised in the Shenandoah community.  It was here that he attended school and worked in his early years.  In August of 1966 he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the 9th Infantry Mobile Riverine Force MeKong Delta in Germany during the Vietnam War.  Although Mooch was not one to talk about his service, his bravery and loyalty to his unit did earn him a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart among various other medals.  He was honorably discharged in August of 1969.
