Herbert M. Goodman, age 95 of Shenandoah died on Monday,December 22, 2008 at the Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah.
Herbert was born on May 3, 1913, the son of Frank and Grace (Whitmore) on a farm near Coin, Iowa. He attended Pleasant Ridge Country School for four years and later graduated from Coin High School in 1930.
On May 24, 1934, he married Helen Carmichael and the following year the couple moved to Golden, Colorado where Herb attended Colorado School of Mines, graduating with a Geological Engineering Degree and a 2nd Lieutenant's commission in the Army Reserve in 1939. He was a geologist for Shell Oil Company prior to and after World War II, working in Texas, Louisiana, Colorado and New Mexico. Because of family health issues, he resigned as Division Exploration Manager in 1953 and moved back to Coin. He farmed until his retirement and later the family moved to Shenandoah in 1975.
He was called to active military duty in October of 1941 and was discharged as a Lieutenant Colonel in May of 1946. Initially he served in several Engineer Training Centers in the United States and later combat operations in the Southwest Theater of Operations atMorotai, N.E.I. and the Philippines. His last station was in Nagoya,Honshu Province, Japan.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #88 in Shenandoah and served as a volunteer at the Shenandoah Public Library for a number of years.
He was preceded in death by his wife Helen, son James, parents,sister Louise Christensen, in-laws Lon and Florence Carmichael and
brother-in-law Milton Dowell.
Survivors include his daughter Ann King and husband Gary of Villisca, 3 grandchildren Mark King and wife Barb of Villisca, Juli Cooper and husband Chris of Nodaway and Michelle Palmer of Pinella Pines, FL; 7 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Thelma Dowell, nieces,nephews, other relatives and friends.
Graveside Memorial Services were held on Saturday, December 27, 2008 at the Elmwood Cemetery in Coin, Iowa with Rev. Allen Bash officiating the service. Full Military Honors were presented by the
Shenandoah American Legion Post #88.
Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
