Helen passed away on Tuesday evening, March 4, 2025 at Accura Healthcare Center in Shenandoah, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, March 14, 2025 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with the Rosary being recited at 6:30 p.m.
Memorials may be directed to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shenandoah or St. Patrick Catholic Church in Imogene.
Helen Teresa Lewis, daughter of Edward Francis and Mary Elizabeth (Maher) Laughlin, was born on June 11, 1929 at Deer Creek Township, Mills County, Iowa. She passed away March 4, 2025 at Accura HealthCare in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 95.
Helen grew up on a farm northeast of Imogene. She attended St. Patrick High School, graduating on May 19, 1946. She received a Diploma in Secretarial Training from The Commercial Extension, Omaha, NE on May 23, 1947. She was employed as a bookkeeper at Kitchen Klatter and George Jay Drug Company. While working at Kitchen Klatter, she was introduced to her future husband Edward Lewis, by her coworker (and Ed's sister), Chloris (Lewis) Edwards. Helen and Ed were united in marriage October 30, 1965 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Imogene. To this union one son was born, Dale Patrick Lewis in 1968. Ed passed away unexpectedly on June 24, 1987.
Helen was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church (Shenandoah, IA), St. Mary's Guild and Business and Professional Women's Club. She served in many roles in the church, including Eucharistic Minister and on the parish council. Helen enjoyed shopping, playing cards, traveling, and attending ball games and concerts of her great nieces and nephews, to whom she was fondly known as "Aunt Hi". With her sister, Geraldine (known to family as "Aunt Gee"), she hosted many elaborate meals for Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. After her son started attending the University of Iowa, she became a big Hawkeye fan, attending several games, including the Rose Bowl at the age of 87.
Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Edward Lewis, her parents Edward Francis Laughlin and Mary Elizabeth Laughlin, father-in-law Floyd Lewis, mother-in-law Mary (Brachtendorf) Lewis, brother Vincent, sisters Louise Laughlin, Geraldine Laughlin and Geraldine M. "Geri" Viner, brothers-and sisters-in law William and Mercedes (Lewis) Rhodes, Eugene Lewis, Larry and Chloris (Lewis) Edwards, nephews John Rhodes, Vincent Gerard Laughlin, John Laughlin and his wife Lanna, niece Mary Laughlin, and great nephew John Shough.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son Dale Lewis of Coralville, Iowa (girlfriend Kelly Carr of Cedar Rapids, Iowa), brother Edward (Darlene) Laughlin of Imogene, IA, sister-in-law Laurel Lewis of Millard, NE, nieces and nephews Vicki Kelly of Nebraska City, NE, Jim (Kim) Laughlin of Red Oak, IA, Janet (Mike) Shough of Altoona, IA, Jeff (Shalee) Laughlin of Imogene IA, Connie Viner (Rich Moore) of Emerson, IA, Brenda (Larry) Pace of Percival, IA , Sue (Bob) Maguire of Davey, NE, Holly (Dr. Bob) McKinney of Clemmons, NC, Mary Asmussen of Omaha, NE, Mike (Diane) Edwards of Council Bluffs IA, Mark Edwards of Omaha, Marsha "Tina" (Eugene Sarchiapone) Edwards of Merrick, NY , niece-in-law Paula Rhodes of Shenandoah, IA, and many other beloved relatives and friends.
