Helen Berrier's Obituary
Helen Marie (Foster) Berrier, daughter of Bert and Ruby Frances (Duff) Foster, was born on October 15, 1924, in Hamburg, Iowa. She passed away on Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 81.
Most of Helen's early life was spent in the Locust Grove township. She attended Hillsdale Country School and graduated from Northboro High School in 1942. Helen also attended Western Union School in Omaha in 1943. On August 11, 1944, Helen was united in marriage to Thomas A. Berrier in Shenandoah, Iowa. The couple resided in Louisville, Kentucky during WWII and then returned to Shenandoah.
Helen worked at Western Union from 1943-1945 and then worked part time jobs at Mt. Arbor and Henry Field Nurseries as well as Summit Florist. From 1974-1982, Tom and Helen owned Highlander Laundromat.
Helen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, VFW Auxiliary #7224, Eagles Club #384 and the Nishna Valley Saddle Club. She enjoyed volunteering and was awarded the First Annual Governors Volunteer Award. Helen also enjoyed doing crafts, playing cards, bingo and dancing. She spent winters in Texas, summers at home and traveling to their cottage at Okoboji.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Ruby Foster; her husband, Tom; daughter, Diana Lynn Bals; sister, Virginia Bostwick; brother, Paul Foster; grandson, Daniel Moody and infant grandson, Troy Todd Berrier. She is survived by her son, Tom Berrier and wife Connie of Shenandoah; daughter, Debra Lord and husband Bob of Indianola, IA; 15 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren as well as other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 24, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah, Iowa with words of comfort by Rev. Rick Sleyster. Carol Harold and Marjorie White attended the memory register. Musical selections were "One Day At A Time" and "How Great Thou Art". Honorary Casket Bearers were Harry Ellis, Larry Varley, Harley Taylor and Terry Broyles. Casket Bearers were Tommy Berrier, Lyle Palmer, Randy Burns, Aaron Tharp, Andy Tharp, Jake Lord, Sean Aldrich, Darin Moody and Brandon Mincy. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah, Iowa. Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Remembrances and condolences may be shared with the family at www.hackettlivingston.com
