Hazel Marie Bartles, daughter of Dewey and Gladys (Perry) Turnbull, was born on July 10, 1926, at Pickering, Missouri. She passed away on Saturday, January 28, 2006, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa, at the age of 79.
Hazel lived in Blanchard, Missouri, until she was about sixteen. At that time, she moved to Shenandoah, Iowa, where she met and married her husband of sixty years. On October 20, 1945, Hazel was united in marriage to Wendell Bartles. They made their home in Shenandoah and raised a set of twins, Ronnie Raye and Connie Faye. Hazel worked at Henry Field's Nursery for a number of years. In 1962, they moved to Wheatridge, Colorado, where they lived for 26 years. She was a beautician for awhile before going to work for Mountain State Metal, as a paint foreman, until her retirement in 1988. Upon retirement, they moved back to Red Oak, Iowa.
She loved to travel and stop and have coffee. Hazel also enjoyed feeding and watching wild birds, doing holiday crafts and decorating. She always had a big heart and smile for everyone. As a wife, mother and best friend, Hazel loved her family immensely. She will be remembered as the best teacher, who was always fun loving and full of time. Anybody that knew Hazel, knew that she was spunky, stubborn and always her own person.
Survivors include her husband, Wendell Bartles of Red Oak, IA; son, Ronnie Raye Bartles and wife Marsha of Red Oak, IA; daughter, Connie Faye Dalrymple and husband Robert of Homestead, FL; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; two brothers, Arthur Turnbull of Shenandoah, IA, and Eugene Turnbull of Loveland, CO; two sisters, Lucille Harris and husband Jim of Denver, CO, and Viola Crawford and husband Larry of Calico Rock, AR; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
Graveside services were held on Thursday, February 2, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. The Rev. Karen Bash gave the words of comfort. A memorial is being established. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah was in charge of the arrangements.
