Glen William "Bill" Hiatt was born on May 20, 1928 at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington D.C. to Glen Otis and Pearl (McKenzie) Hiatt. He lived in Cottage City, Maryland until the age of 5, then lived in Chevy Chase, Maryland until the age of 12, at which time his parents purchased a farm near Randolph, Iowa. Bill along with his parents and newborn sister Elizabeth "Betty" Ann returned to Iowa. Bill attended and then graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1946. While in high school he participated in band and football. He also worked part time at Hyde and Vodenburger Supply, which later became Hy-Vee.

Following graduation Bill attended Tarkio College for one year. He continued to farm in Randolph until January 4, 1951, at which time he joined the United States Air Force. While in the Air Force he received training as an airplane mechanic and served as crew chief on C119's, he also played football. He was then assigned to serve with the 40th Troop Carrier Squadron and 123rd Troop Carrier Wing whose main duty was flying the Berlin Blockade. They all later became the 68th Squadron 317 Troop Carrier Wing and were moved to Neuibeburg in Munich, Germany after 2 years. His duties in Neuibeburg included airbag drops, NATO, show of strength mass, embassy and consulate escort, cargo of guns and supplies, and dropping paratroopers. He served his country until he was honorable discharged on October 30, 1954.

Upon his return home from the service he continued farming and returned to Tarkio College where he graduated in 1958. On April 27, 1956 he was united in marriage to A. Virginia and to this union six children were born; Virginia, Bill, Melinda, Rebecca, Elizabeth, and Christine.

During his working years he continued to farm, taught Jr. High Math and Science at Hamburg Public Schools, worked for the US Post Office in Shenandoah, where he retired after working 25 years, drove a school bus, was a circulation manager at the Sentinel, and worked as a dispatcher with the Shenandoah Police Department. He was also active for years as a Boy Scout and Girl Scout Leader.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Elizabeth Ann Hiatt Hansen. Those left to cherish his memory include his six children Virginia Hiatt-Thompson and husband Paul of Rochester, MN, William C. Hiatt of Shenandoah, IA, Melinda K. Hiatt-Whisler and husband Michael of Hickman, NE, Rebecca J. Hiatt of Ames, IA, Elizabeth A. Hiatt of Ames, IA, and Christine C. Hiatt of Nevada, IA; 4 grandchildren; other family and friends.
