Obituary

Gary L. Lewis son of Jesslee and Audrey L. (Morelock) Lewis was born September 25, 1941 at Hand Hospital in Shenandoah, Iowa. Gary entered into eternal peace on Friday, August 16, 2013 at the Shenandoah Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.
Gary grew up in Shenandoah and graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1959. At 17, Gary played in the USGA's Twelfth Junior Amateur Golf Championship at Stanford University. Then Gary went on to Clarinda College for one year. After college, he enlisted in the Air Force in 1961. He served honorably for four years.
Gary managed Country Clubs in Kansas City, Des Moines, Iowa City, Virginia Beach, and Norfolk, Virginia, and then settled in Shenandoah in 1972 with his wife Jeanne (Sipe) Lewis, daughter Barb (Lewis) Gerlach, and son, Dan Lewis. Gary managed the Elks Club for a year and then went on to work with his parents at Lewis Cleaners. Gary started Gary's Carpet Cleaning Service and worked there from 1977 to 1986. He then owned and operated the Headquarters in Shenandoah from 1986-2001.
Gary served on the Shenandoah City Council and Our House Daycare board. He enjoyed antiques, golfing, reading, and collecting stretch glass. Most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren, Jesslee Lewis, daughter of Gary's oldest son Dave Lewis, and John Gerlach, Cain Zirfas, Clay Gerlach, Jessica Gerlach, and Cord Zirfas children of Gary's oldest daughter Barb.
Survivors include: mother Audrey Lewis of Shenandoah, Iowa and wife Jean Lewis of Shenandoah, Iowa; children Dave Lewis of Fort Madison, Iowa, Barb Gerlach and husband Chris Gerlach of Goshen, Kentucky, and Dan Lewis of Council Bluffs, Iowa; brother Michael Lewis and wife Sonja Lewis of Smithville, Missouri and brother-in-law John Sipe and wife Isai Sipe of Guthrie Center, Iowa and brother-in-law Ron Sipe of Panora, Iowa; grandchildren, Jesslee Lewis, John Gerlach, Cain Zirfas, Clay Gerlach, Jessica Gerlach, and Cord Zirfas, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Jesslee Lewis.
