Garlen Eugene Perry, son of Donald Wilbur and Wyona Mae (Mather) Perry, was born on December 11, 1944 at Hand Hospital in Shenandoah, Iowa. He entered into eternal rest on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 68.
Growing up, Garlen lived on the Woodbury Farm with his parents, two brothers and sister until the age of seven. At that time they moved to the Walt Nixon farm two miles east of Farragut, Iowa. At the age of 13, the family moved to Shenandoah where he finished school, graduating with the Shenandoah High School Class of 1962. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Army National Guard and was stationed in California at Fort Ord.
A few years after his discharge from the National Guard he married Kay Anderson and to that union Angela Dionne Perry was born on June 14, 1970. On November 2, 1982 he married Marlene (Burdick) Bair at the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah.
Garlen and Marlene sold used furniture for several years and were also U-Haul dealers. Before that, he sold cars in Omaha and in Rock Port, Missouri. Garlen tore down the Tall Corn Motel building and he also did metal salvaging for a few years. Struggling with medical problems, he never let them get the better of him. Throughout it all, he always kept going. His wonderful sense of humor will always be remembered.
Among his favorite past times were: fishing, mowing the lawn, walking his Husky dog, Sadie, visiting with family and friends, watching cowboy westerns on TV, singing in a religious quartet for several years and singing with the Plainsmen group for a short time.
Preceding him in death were his parents and 15 year old grandson, Zak Porter. Survivors include his loving wife, Marlene Perry of Shenandoah; daughter, Angie Perry of Shenandoah; step-daughter, Teresa Bair of Shenandoah; two brothers, Richard and Ronald Perry, both of Shenandoah; sister, Lola Mae Carlsen and sister-in-law, Carleen Perry, both of Shenandoah; two step-sons, Charles Bair and wife Jody of Greensburg, PA and Gary Bair of Shenandoah; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
