Obituary

Floyd Alvin, Fike, Jr. was born on June 25, 1937 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Thelma (Homan) Fike, Sr.  Floyd entered into eternal peace on Friday, December 9, 2022 at the Red Oak Rehabilitation Center.  Much of his early life was spent in the Shenandoah and Essex area.  They lived in the Omaha area in his younger years before the family moved to settle in Essex.  Alvin attended schools in both Omaha and Shenandoah through the 8 th grade.

In 1960 Alvin enlisted and proudly served in the United States Army as an Army Medic until 1963. He would often talk about the long flights in a cargo plane from the states and Frankfurt, Germany.   On July 21, 1963, he was united in marriage to Sandra Rose Carlson in Essex, Iowa.  They reside on North Street in Essex, Iowa.  To this union two daughters were born Dawn Marie on March 5, 1966 and Donna Jolee on August 3, 1977.  Alvin was a very devoted father and loved his girls and wife very much.

Alvin worked at several local nurseries including Mount Arbor.  He mostly worked construction first for Chuck Gee and lastly for Sterling McLaren as a heavy equipment operator.  After back injuries and multiple surgeries, he retired from that line of work.   In later years he started mowing yards for several people in the Essex and Shenandoah areas.  He started with his sisters and some of the friends and saw what a great job he did and it only grew from there.  He took great pride in making sure their yards were immaculate.  He would work from sun up to sun down and on some of the hottest days.

Alvin loved playing cards and doing crosswords.  He went to Camp Sunnyside and learned how to do woodworking.  After that he built his little shop next to his house and started building.  He made little rockers, highchairs, baby cradles for his kids, granddaughter and nieces, bread boxes and many more.  He loved his candy and cookies, calling them his "heart food."

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Patricia Carlson, Pranda Hale, Lee Ellen Allumbaugh and Mary Jo Smith.  Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 59 years Sandra Fike of Essex; daughters Dawn (David) Daugherty of Sidney and Donna (Mike) Driskell of Farragut; grandchildren Colbie Fike, Ethan Mace, Carter and Gavin (Jamie) Driskell; great-grandchildren Tucker Binau, Kayden and Ozlynn Hunter and Knox Driskell; brothers-in-law Verlin Smith and Ottis Hale; several nieces and nephews, other family and friends. Memorials may be directed to the family.
