Obituary

Ed passed away early Wednesday morning at the Garden View Care Center.

Edward (Eddie) Dale Cox, Shenandoah, IA, was born to Clifford C. and Lois Cox on April 26, 1930, outside New Hampton, Missouri. He graduated from New Hampton High School in 1948 and married Deva Whited in 1949. Ed passed away on January 9, 2013, at age 82 years, 8 months, 14 days.


After serving with the Missouri Highway Patrol for eight years, Ed was ordained in the Disciples of Christ Church and served in Rock Port, MO, until 1969. In addition to his pastoral duties, Ed taught English for the Rock Port school district. He was appointed Dean of Students to his alma mater, Tarkio College (1964), Tarkio, MO, where he was highly regarded by faculty and students. In 1971 he was again called to the ministry and became pastor of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Shenandoah, Iowa. While in Shenandoah Ed earned a Masters of Science degree from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, MO, and taught English part-time for Iowa Western Community College at both the Clarinda and Shenandoah sites. Ed retired from the church in 1995 and from teaching in 2003 after Deva suffered a debilitating stroke.


Ed and Deva had three sons, Dan (wife Nancy) of Omaha, Ben (Joni) of Shenandoah, IA, and Mike (Katherine) of Tarkio, MO. Dan and Nancy have two sons, Clayton (Britnie), and Matthew of Omaha, NE. Clayton and Britnie have two sons, Keller and Connor, and a daughter, Quinn. Ben and Joni have a daughter, Rachel Cox (Adam), of South Bend, IN, and a son, Aaron (Alison), of Des Moines, IA. Deva is a resident at Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah. Ed is also survived by his sister, Linda (Larry) Sanders, and sister-in-law Louise Long of Bethany, MO.
