Duane Burdett Young was on born July 12th 1935 in Creston, Iowa. He attended country school north of Prescott and graduated from Prescott High School in 1953. He held jobs at Spring Oil and then Lavely and Reedhead Insurance.
Duane stayed very active in town team basketball and baseball. He was also active in the community as a member of the Junior Chamber. He organized, printed and circulated the "News From Around the Square" dance schedules for many years. Duane also spent countless hours teaching and calling Square Dances for the youth and adult groups in Corning. He also attended State and National Square Dance conventions far too many to mention.
In 1972 he moved to Shenandoah and went to work for KMA radio in advertising sales. Shortly after that Duane moved his family to Sidney and worked for Pullman Insurance. Duane's love for basketball was still strong as he spent many an evening down at the school playing ball with the high school players as well asSundayafternoons playing makeup games in the gym. The years were full of high school sports during the week and most weekends there was a Square Dance to call. In 1976 he returned to KMA to work.
In 1987 he married Merna Blackburn. Duane and Merna lived in Shenandoah until 1989 at which time they moved to Glenwood, Iowa. In Glenwood they owned and operated Midwest Lanes Bowling Center. They remained in Glenwood until 1998 when Duane retired and they moved back to Shenandoah. Duane kept busy with golf, bowling and attending the grand-kids school events.
There was also time to travel with Merna including a winter spent traveling the southwest after she retired. He also enjoyed spending afternoons on the tractor mowing the sod field.
