Dorothy Lucile (Danielson) Piester, 93, of rural Shenandoah, passed away December 14, 2014 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center/Clarkson in Omaha. She was born on October 16, 1921 in rural Page County, Iowa to Roland H. and Ruth A. (Dugan) Danielson.

Dorothy spent a few of growing up years at the Iowa Soldiers Orphans Home in Davenport, Iowa. She started her schooling at College Springs, Iowa. She graduated from 8th grade from Shenandoah. She spent 9th grade at SUDLOW Junior High in Davenport and then went to High School at Sioux Rapids, Iowa.

Following high school Dorothy went to a two year nursing training program and worked at the Shenandoah Hospital during World War II. While she was in training her co-students gave her the nickname of "Danny" that she was called the rest of her life.

She also met one of her patients whom was to be her future husband. Walter E. Piester and Dorothy were united in marriage on November 8, 1943. To this union two daughters were born Sandra Kay and Judith Ann.

After Walt's passing Dorothy worked a summer for Waldof Caf. Then she worked from Henry Fields. She then worked at Vet-A-Mix for 13 years until retirement.

Dorothy and Walter joined several card clubs around town. They also enjoyed spending time at Izack Walton. Dorothy was a member of Friendly Circle Club, Visit-a-While, Christian Women, and Locust Grove Methodist UMW.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Walter Piester, her parents, sisters Florence Gleason and Betty Kell, brother John Kent Danielson, step-daughter Jacquelyn Dearmont, step-son Robert Piester and half brother Raymond C. Danielson.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters Sandra K. Sloan of Omaha, Nebraska and Judith Ann (Sal) Mercurio of Moreno Valley, California, grandchildren Carrie (Bob) Meyer of Omaha, Nebraska, Ashley Mercurio of Kansas City, Missouri, Bryan (Jane) Piester of Columbia, Missouri and Linda (Bill) Braun of Sequim, Washington, great-grandchildren Drew Piester of Columbia, Missouri and Claire Piester of Missoula, Montana, sisters Maxine Danielson of Sacramento, California and Hazel (Ralph) Bartelt of Polson, Montana, half-brother Roland , Jr. (Sue) Danielson of Lake Isabella, California, several extended family and many friends.

Burial will be held at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah, Iowa.
