Dorothy Deane Howard Lumry, was born December 27, 1913, to Earl & Rose Gruber Howard, at the home of Paul & Anna Gruber in rural Fremont County, Iowa. She grew up east of Shenandoah, attended Pleasant Hill Country School through 8th grade, and graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1931.

She worked as a bookkeeper for Baron Oil Co. for 13 years, and then in the accounting department of Mount Arbor Nurseries for 35 years, where she met her husband, Bert. Dorothy married Oscar Herbert Lumry on September 8, 1951 in Independence, Missouri, and they had a son, Mark Howard Lumry. Dorothy was a member & trustee of the First Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women's Assoc., and WHEOS, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the memorial committee. Dorothy loved her home and playing cards with former Mount Arbor employees. Five years ago she became a resident at Fair Oaks, and most recently The Ambassador Sidney, where she enjoyed new & old friends, visits from relatives and the family dog, Parker.

Preceding Dorothy in death were her husband, Bert; her parents; sister Pauline Morton; brothers, Ivan Howard and Stephen Bernard Howard. Dorothy is survived by her son, Mark Lumry of Edina, Minnesota; twin brother and wife, Donald & Dorlea Howard of Maryville, Missouri; sister-in-law Irene Howard of Burlington, Iowa; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 28, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. the First Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. Rick Sleyster. Special music was performed by Susie Schaaf. Organist was Terry Stafford. Attending the memory register was Barbara Bredensteiner. Caring for flowers were Naomi Worl and Ennie Martin. Ushers were Tom Brodersen and Don Nelson. Honorary casket bearers were Stan Lawyer, Jeff Shipley, Shawn Haynie and Robert Lohman. Casket bearers were Mark Lumry, Gary Falk, Charles Spencer, Chris Falk, James Spencer, Robert Dea and Joseph Spencer. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Memorials are being directed to the First Presbyterian Church Acolyte Fund. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
