Dorothy Marie Colwell was born on May 30, 1929, in Atchison County, Missouri to Robert and Minnie (Farley) Whitham.  She passed away on Sunday, July 17, 2022 at her home in Imogene, Iowa.

She was raised south of Rock Port, Missouri and attended country school just south of the family's farmstead.

She enjoyed helping her father with farming, sawing wood and sharpening discs for plowing.  Also helped her mother with gardening and canning.  In the fall she and her sister Hazel would shuck corn.

Dorothy stayed on the farm until she married William Kirk.  Then they moved to Shenandoah where William was a mechanic.  To this union three children were born William, Ella, and Robert.  William and Dorothy were later divorced.  Dorothy worked for several cafes as a waitress and worked for the Amvets and VFW Clubs to raise the children.

Dorothy later married Marion Colwell.  They moved to Imogene where they bought a house.  They both worked in the nurseries.

She was on the Imogene City Council for about 20 years and was Mayor for four years.  She enjoyed volunteering at the food pantry and Eagles Club.  She was a member of the Eagles Club and a lifetime member of the VFW.  She loved having Thanksgiving and Christmas at her home.

She was preceded in death by her husband Marion Colwell, son William Kirk, parents Robert and Minnie Whitham, six brothers Clarence, Wade, Adrian, Ray, James and Donald Whitham and sister Hazel Hall.

She will be sadly missed by her children Ella Staley of Red Oak, Iowa, and Robert Kirk of Imogene, Iowa, 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, host of nieces, nephews, other family, and friends.

Celebration of Life Graveside Service will be held 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 21, 2022 at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah.  Visitation with the family will be held from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah.  Memorials maybe directed to People for Paws or the Shenandoah Food Pantry.
