Dorothy Clarice Cleaveland, daughter of the late Fred and Hazel (Ostmeyer) Fulton, was born on June 21, 1924 in Sioux City, Iowa. She passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at the Goldenrod Care Center in Clarinda, Iowa. She was 92 years old.

Dorothy grew up in Sioux City, Iowa. She had two brothers, Harry and Frank, and one sister, Elaine. Many members of her extended family also lived in the Sioux City area, therefore family gatherings were a big part of her childhood. The family gatherings continued at Lake Okoboji to the present and was something she always looked forward to in the summer months.

Dorothy then enrolled in the United States Navy. She was very proud of her service and remained a strong supporter of all branches of the Armed Forces. As the war concluded and she received her honorable discharge, she enrolled in cosmetology school and began her career in Sioux City, IA as a hairdresser. A few years after she had her son, Ray Markut, she moved to Shenandoah, Iowa to raise her son in a small town. Once an established hairdresser in the area, she opened her salon Dorothy's Beauty Salon. The salon was in her home on Maple Street and that is where she lived a majority of her years.

Dorothy retired at the age of 62 and began travelling more and more. Some of the areas she frequented yearly were Gulf Shores, Alabama; Las Vegas, Nevada; Los Angeles, CA; and Okoboji, Iowa. She made new friends as well as visited old friends, and of course her family for two weeks each summer at Lake Okoboji. Dorothy loved to be around her family and friends whether it was sitting around a campfire, playing cards or board games, or just chatting. She was a very social person and invested herself in getting to know people and being a loyal friend to many. This remained a part of her life when she moved into Holmes apartment complex and developed special bonds with the residents there. You could always find them out in the commons area together laughing and sharing stories of their past and their families.

Dorothy always said her greatest accomplishment was her son, Ray, and the father and grandfather he became after having three kids with his wife, Gwen. She loved attending all of her grandchildren's activities and then adding more joy to her life was doing the same for her great grandchildren. Dorothy loved and cared for her family very much.

Dorothy is survived by her son Ray Markut and wife Gwen of Shenandoah, three grandchildren Nicki Markut of Lincoln, NE, Jody Markut and wife Berlinda of Lincoln, NE and Cory Markut and wife Whitney of Malvern, IA and five great-grandchildren Hayden, Evan, Brianna, Xander and Liam.
