Donald Gene Gibson, son of Hayes Swisher and Clara Dale (Brooks) Gibson, was born on June 29, 1945 in Shenandoah, Iowa. He passed away on March 28, 2016 at the Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Bellevue, Nebraska. He was 70 years old.
Don went to Elementary and High School in Shenandoah, graduating with the class of 1963. He entered the U.S. Army in May of 1963, he was honorably discharged from the U. S. Army in November of 1963. He then served in the U.S. National Guard QMC until July of 1970.
On April 27, 1968 he was united in marriage to Rita Gutschenritter at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Imogene.
Don was employed by the City of Shenandoah and worked in many departments from 1967 until his retirement in 2000. From 2003 until 2005, Don and Rita managed the restaurant at the American Legion Country Club. He also helped at the family farm in Imogene until his illness.
Don was a member of the Knights of Columbus, 22 Club, American Legion Post 88, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Elks Lodge 1122, Shenandoah City Council and Page County Landfill. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, spending time with his grandchildren, golfing and cooking.
Don was preceded in death by his two sons Donald Jr. and T.J. Gibson, parents Hayes and Clara Gibson, father and mother-in-law George and Cecelia Gutschenritter, sisters Della Ruth Gibson, LouAnn Dailey and Clara Stout, brother Harlen Gibson, brother-in-law Glenn Brownlee and nephew Russell Gibson.
Don is survived by his wife Rita Gibson of Shenandoah, daughter Angela Maher and husband Brad and their children Quinn, Declan, and Naela Maher of Farragut, daughter Melissa Franks and husband Craig of Essex, brothers Ed Gibson and wife Charlotte of Shenandoah, George Gibson and wife Connie of Shenandoah and Ronald Gibson of Texas and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Burial will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah with military rites provided by the Shenandoah American Legion Post 88.
