Delmus Gutschenritter's Obituary
William Delmus Gutschenritter was born in Page County, IA on November 14, 1927 to William Louis and Vergie Belle (Pritchard) Gutschenritter. He eternally entered into rest on Monday, April 12, 2010 at his home in Shenandoah after a courageous battle with cancer.
He attended grade school at Sentinel Country School before graduating from Shenandoah High School in 1945. Following graduation, he began a career in farming, which lasted 49 years. His farming was interrupted by serving in the Korean War from 1950-52. He then returned home in 1952 and resumed farming. He was united in marriage to Patricia (Pat) Smelcer on April 16, 1955. They were united in marriage for 53 years. They were blessed with three children: Denise Lynn, Daniel William, and Debra Lee.
Delmus and Pat first started farming in the Imogene and Hamburg areas, before settling in the Coin area, where they farmed and resided 33 years. In 1997, Delmus and Pat moved to Shenandoah and he was employed by Valley News for five years after his retirement from farming.
Delmus was a life long farmer and enjoyed laboring the soil and watching his crops grow. He was passionate about farming and enjoyed the lifestyle it provided. Farming, as well as family, was very important to Delmus. Delmus faithfully attended his grandchildren's activities and sporting events.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, National Farmers Organization (NFO), and American Legion.
Preceding Delmus in death were his parents; wife, Patricia (7/31/08), and three brothers: one in infancy, Leo Gutschenritter and Carroll Gutschenritter.
Those left to cherish his memories included his children, Denise Smith and husband Kevin of Shelby, NC, Danny Gutschenritter and wife Janet of Creston, IA, and Debbie Wheeler and husband Ron of Glenwood, IA; six grandchildren, Ashley and Lindsey Smith of Shelby, NC, Cole and Jake Gutschenritter of Creston, IA and Kyle and Brady Wheeler of Glenwood, IA; siblings Geraldine Morelock of Shenandoah, IA and Frank Gutschenritter of Imogene, IA; other relatives and friends.
Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, St. Mary's Catholic Church or the American Diabetes Association.
