Dale Eugene Whitehill was born on July 30, 1929 to Paul and Esther (Olson) Whitehill at the rural farm home 6 miles south of Shenandoah. At the time of his birth, the farm was located on what is now Highway 59, however the dirt/mud road hindered the doctor and Dale's grandmother who was a mid-wife from arriving at the farm. Their vehicle got stuck and a neighbor had to take them the remaining 2 miles to the farm.

Dale was born the second son of the family and attended Centennial country school for 9 years with his class being the last to graduate before the school closed. He attended Shenandoah High School and graduated as part of the class of 1947. He participated in agriculture classes and the FFA.

He was drafted in the army in 1951 and had basic training at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He served during the Korean War in the Pusan area for about 16 months and a short time in Japan.  During his service time he was awarded three bronze service stars for his bravery.   Total time out of the United States was 18 months and 6 days. Upon Dale's return from Korea, he and his brother, Eldon, had a custom corn picking and hay baling business.

He took over the home place farming operation in 1961. As a farmer, Dale grew corn, soybeans, hay, wheat, and oats. He also raised hogs, cattle and chickens. In addition to farming his home places, he rented the Frances (Watts) Dean farm for 40 years and in 2001 the family purchased the land from Frances. His desire was to give his boys a chance to become farmers as he helped them get started with 4-H hogs and steers.

He was married to Wanda Jane Barnett from February 21, 1970 to 1991. They were the parents to 3 boys: Joe, Keith and Larry.

Dale was a strong supporter of the American Red Cross, giving over 21 gallons of his versatile "O positive" blood over a 60 year period of time. One medical professional has estimated this to have helped over 168 people.

Dale was a member of the Summit Methodist Church, the National Farmers Organization, the Page County Democratic Central Committee and the Shenandoah American Legion Post #88.  Dale had a passion for baseball.  He enjoyed playing in the Summit Church Men's League in his younger days.  His favorite team was the Cincinnati Reds.

Dale lived on the same home place for the last 90+ years and lived in his current home for 75+ years, with exception of his time in Korea. His final wish was to remain in his home for the remainder of his life and his wish was achieved with in-home caretakers.

Dale was preceded in death by his father and mother; Paul and Esther; brother, Eldon; sister-in-law Ada; and son, Keith.

Left to mourn his death are his sons: Joe of Council Bluffs, IA and Larry (Holly) of Roland, IA, ten grandchildren: Paige, Meg, Nora, Danny (of California), Audri, Morgan (of Webster City, IA), Grant, Emma (of Roland, IA), Mark, Ashley (of Shenandoah) and other family and friends. Also mourning his death is his beloved dog, Penny.
