Carroll DeLayne Skalberg, son of Paul and Edith (Freeman) Skalberg, was born on December 4, 1919 in Essex, Iowa. He passed away on Monday, June 19, 2017 at his home with family and friends at his bedside.

Carroll served his country from 1942 to 1945 in the U.S. Army Air Force. He was a combat veteran of World War II. Carroll was very proud of his military service. On March 25, 1943 in Omaha, Nebraska he was united in marriage to Dorothy Ann Carlson.

After returning from World War II, he farmed in the Essex area until he purchased the Empire Motel in St. Francis, Kansas. After returning from Kansas, he owned two laundromats in Shenandoah and sold real estate for Rex Longstreet. He loved his family and nature. One of his proudest accomplishments in life was helping those less fortunate.

He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Skalberg, son Donnie James Skalberg, granddaughter Cari Ann Skalberg, grandson Danny Coughlin, his parents Paul and Edith Skalberg and brothers Glenn and Ray Skalberg.

Carroll is survived by his children; Terry (Marsha) Skalberg of Red Oak, Carole Ann (Don) Coughlin of Fremont, Nebraska and Randy (Jamie) Skalberg of Essex, grandsons; Todd (Angeli) Skalberg of Wyoming, Trevor (Holly) Skalberg of New Hampshire, Kyle (Amy) Coughlin of Fremont, Nebraska, T.J. (Kristie) Skalberg of Essex and Eric (Kayla) Skalberg of Creston, Iowa, great-grandchildren; Olivia, Lydia, Ellie, Isaiah, Sofie, Chelsea (Brian), Kali, Dawson, Drew, Addisen, Sara, Samantha, Lexi, Dominik, Hayleigh and Bentley, brothers-in-law; Verl Carlson of California and Jim Carlson of Missouri, special caregivers of the last two years Carol O'Neil and Shirley Thrasher, numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

A private family graveside service will be held at a later date in Essex Cemetery with military rites.
