Carl "Bill" Stephens, Jr's Obituary
Carl William "Bill" Stephens was born on January 4, 1945 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of Carl William "Short" and Marvis Eileen (Johnson) Stephens. Bill entered into peace on June 11, 2010 at the University of Nebraska Hospital in Omaha.
Bill's early years were spent on the family farm between Shenandoah and Essex. As a child, Bill helped around the farm and rode his horse to Mt. Vernon Country School. He later attended Shenandoah Community Schools where he graduated with the Class of 1963. He continued his education at Iowa State University and later at Iowa Western Community College.
On October 16, 1964 he was united in marriage to Lynda Nicholls in Shenandoah, Iowa. The couple was later blessed with the birth of two sons; Ludlo and Lindsey.
He was drafted into the United States Army at Fort Lewis, Washington on May 28, 1968. Bill served his country with pride for 13 months in Vietnam, where he served as a Ranger in the LRRP before receiving an Honorable Discharge on December 30, 1969.
Bill was a true cowboy. He enjoyed the sport of Rodeo and took part in roping calves and bulldogging for over 30 years. He also farmed for the majority of his adult life and served as a veterinary assistant for Doc Bonnes. Many also knew Bill as the "Milk Man" for Anderson Erickson Dairy, a job which he held for 13 1/2 years.
He was a member of the Nishna Valley Saddle Club, Shenandoah Auxiliary Police, United Rodeo Association, American Legion and the United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. Bill was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and numerous outdoor activities. He was rarely without a dog throughout most of his life. In his later years, he enjoyed cooking and baking for a multitude of family and friends throughout Southwest Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Phyllis Hein and Rozann Stephens. Those left to honor his memory include his wife Lynda of Shenandoah; children Ludlo Stephens and significant other Stacey Cox of Ankeny, IA and Lindsey Stephens and wife Jenny of Shenandoah; two grandchildren Payton and Kassidy Stephens of Shenandoah; sister Shirley Stephens of New York City, NY; other family, close friends and his "good ole dog" Buck.
