Berneice E. Snook, 101, of Shenandoah passed away on Friday, February 29, 2008 at the Garden View Care Center. Berneice was the daughter of John W. and Jennie M. (Haley) Behm. John was a longtime lumberman in Shenandoah. The Haley family were early settlers in the Imogene and Essex areas. Berneice graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1925 and from Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri with an A.A. Degree Major in Music in 1927. She was a member of Delta Rho Alpha social sorority and Sigma Gamma honorary musical sorority. She sang in a number of select vocal groups at Stephens, including the College Summit at one time. After Graduation from Stephens she accepted a position at the KMA radio studio as an entertainer and as cashier at the Earl May Store.
On March 20, 1929 she was married to Ivan E. Snook. They made their home on the Snook farm. One son, John William Snook, was born to Ivan and Berneice on July 10, 1930. He was a very talented young man, who won many honors in music, 4H livestock, art works and state horticulture. John passed away on May 26, 1958.
Berneice was a member of the First Presbyterian Church since the age of 13. She was a charter member of the Thursday Music Club, 65 year member of the Book Club and was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Ivan and Berneice observed their 71st wedding anniversary on March 20, 2000. Ivan died on December 26, 2000. Berneice leaves behind many friends to mourn.
Funeral Services were held on Monday, March 03, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. from the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah. Words of Comfort were given by Rev. Rick Sleyster. The Organist was Margaret Woods. The Vocalist was Doris Brodersen. Music selected for the service was "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Casket Bearers were Tim Bredensteiner, Jimmy Fulk, Roger Jones, Robert Lynn, Thomas J. Lynn, and Mark Simmons. Caring for flowers were Jeanne Gee and Mary Alice Johnson. Attending the Memory Register was Ann Gee. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Memorials in Berneice's name are being directed to the Presbyterian Church or the charity of the donor's choice.
