Alvin Thomas Tyner was born on December 20, 1921 to Alvin Wilson and Iva Charlotte (Trewet) Tyner in rural Farmer's City area near Randolph, Iowa and passed away on May 26, 2010 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Growing up in Fremont County, Iowa, Alvin attended country school and graduated from Randolph High School. Alvin joined the Army in 1942 and was a member of the of the 95th Infantry Division. On November 18, 1944, Alvin, then a Technical Sergeant, took command of his platoon after the platoon leader and the platoon sergeant became casualties of fierce enemy fire while crossing the Moselle River. After reorganizing the squads, he led them vigorously in the destruction of all German resistance in the immediate area. He then collected men from other organizations in the sector and against determined opposition, forcibly established a bridgehead which opened the way on Metz for the main battalion body. For his heroism in battle, he was awarded the Silver and Bronze Stars and commissioned a second lieutenant. Alvin went on to spend 23 years in the reserves becoming a Captain.

Alvin married Mildred Danner on May 31, 1947, in Shenandoah, Iowa. They made their home in Shenandoah. To this union two children were born, Thomas Alvin Tyner and Vicky Sue Tyner Briggs.

Alvin worked for Genuine Auto Parts for many years and taught school at Iowa Western Community College for 12 years before his retirement. He was a member of American Legion Post #88 serving as Commander, the Shenandoah Elks Lodge and served on the Armory Board; he was also a member of the National Order of Battlefield Commissions. He was an avid golfer an card player.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son Tom; and five brothers, Gerald, his twin Melvin, Eugene, Maurice and Donald. Alvin is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mildred; daughter Vicky Sue and son-in-law Michael Briggs; sisters-in-laws, Marilyn Tyner of Seal Beach California and Betty Tyner of Creston, Iowa; a cousin Mary Jo Davis of Hemingford, Nebraska; nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 29, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by Rev. Clark Finehout and Rev. Fred Bryson. Attending the memory register were Betty Leacox and Elizabeth Mullins. Caring for the flowers were Mary Ann Goodrich, Marci Volker and Suzanne Tysor. Organist was Marcella Heaton. Vocalists were Suzanne Tysor and Morgan Pedersen, who sang "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Casket bearers were Mike Briggs, Robert Longman, D. B. Mullins, Harvey Vermillion, Jim Androy and Tony Hansen. Honorary casket bearers were all of Alvin's friends. Full military rites were accorded by the Shenandoah American Legion Post #88. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Memorials in Alvin's name are being directed to the Alzheimer's Association.
