Alma Margaret Castle, daughter of Swain and Annie (Lindquist) Solon, was born on July 28, 1913 in Shenandoah, Iowa. She passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at the Shenandoah Medical Center following a brief illness at the age of 97.
Growing up in Shenandoah, Alma attended the Shenandoah Community Schools, graduating from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1931.
On December 24, 1937, Alma was united in marriage to the love of her life, John Rex Castle at Rock Port, Missouri. To this union three children, Terry, Sue and John Robert were born. Following their marriage they made their home in the Shenandoah area.
Alma worked for the Earl May Seed Co. as a bookkeeper in Shenandoah prior to World War II. During the war Alma worked as a secretary for the Fog Nozzle Co. in California. Once the war was concluded, the family moved back to rural Iowa where Alma concentrated on being a farm wife and raising her children. Alma enjoyed sewing, gardening, playing Scrabble and baking.
Preceding Alma in death were her parents; husband, John Rex Castle; son, John Robert Castle; son-in-law, Paul Dusterhoft; three brothers, Cliff, Walter and Harry Solon; five sisters, Alice Royer, Clara Holmes, Ruth Campin, Edith Spear and Lily Spruell.
Survivors include her son, Terry Castle of Shenandoah; daughter, Sue Dusterhoft of Lone Tree, Iowa; two granddaughters, Rebecca and her husband Kevin Olson of Shenandoah and Christina Castle of Washington, D.C.; daughter-in-law, Karen Garner of Farragut, Iowa; many nieces & nephews; her dog, Izzy and her cat, Callie; other relatives and many friends.
