Alice Margaret Mitchell was born January 20, 1908 in Odessa, Washington. She was the eldest of five children born to James and Margie (Dickson) Wright. She passed away Tuesday morning, July 5, 2016 at Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 108 years and 166 days.

Returning with her parents at the age of 3 to their hometown of Norwalk, Iowa, she attended and graduated from Norwalk High School and furthered her education, graduating from Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines. Her first job was as a secretary in the Senate of the Iowa Legislature. In 1933, she met Thomas E. Mitchell through mutual friends. They married and she moved to his hometown of Lancaster, Missouri. She was very active in the Lancaster Methodist Church, Eastern Star, and PEO and was recognized by each of these organizations for her contributions. She loved to cook, to sew, and to knit, but was most happy when sharing the results of these talents with those she loved.

In 1996 at the age of 88 she moved to Shenandoah, Iowa to be near family. She was graciously welcomed by this new community and was able to continue with many of her previous interests and organizations in her new hometown. She enjoyed playing bridge until well after her 100th birthday, particularly if she got good cards.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, siblings, and nephew Dickson Wright. She is survived by nieces and nephews: Phil (Suzy) Wright of Georgetown, TX; Janice (Al) Munneke of Crest Hill, IL; Jed (Patti Hansen) Keller of Grants Pass, OR; John Rost; Margie (Carl) Boylan of Shenandoah, IA, Mary Jane (Scott) Irons of Boise, ID and Alice (Ron Little) Bryan of Des Moines, IA. She is also survived by beloved great nieces and nephews along with many friends very dear to her.

Visitation with the family will be held from 1:00-2:00 pm Thursday, July 7, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah.

Funeral service will held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, July 7, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah.

Burial will be held 11:00 am, Friday, July 8, 2016 at Arni Memorial Cemetery in Lancaster, Missouri.

Memorials may be directed to the Shenandoah Food Pantry or the Shenandoah Public Library Foundation.
