Obituary

Alfred F."Sonny" Grebert was born on September 9, 1941 in Clarinda, Iowa, the son of Hilbert Henry and Frances Myrtle (Johnson) Grebert. Sonny entered into peace on Thursday, April 23, 2009 in Shenandoah, Iowa after a courageous battle with cancer.
Sonny spent his early years in Clarinda and Essex. He could often be found at Porter's Lake, roller skating with his friends. He graduated from Essex High School with the Class of 1959. In 1964 he enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country with pride. In 1965 Sonny was called to duty in Vietnam, where he earned the Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and also received the honor of expert rifleman. He was honorably discharged in 1966.
On May 14, 1966 Sonny was united in marriage to his best friend, Sherry Sue Priest at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Clarinda. The couple made their home in Shenandoah, where they raised their three children. Sonny and Sherry were blessed with over 42 years of marriage.
Sonny held various jobs throughout his life including; farming, carpentry work, plumbing, selling appliances for Gambles, and most recently working as a mason. His most important job, however, was that of being a loving husband and father.
He enjoyed being a member of the Shenandoah Saddle Club his earlier years, serving as a member of the American Legion, being an active part of the Sidney Iowa Rodeo Committee, and was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in both Clarinda and Essex. In his free time, Sonny enjoyed calf roping and attending rodeos.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife Sherry of Shenandoah; three children, Sabrina Marriott and husband Mark of Vandelia, MO, Sheila Grebert of Des Moines, IA and Shawn Grebert and wife Heather of Shenandoah; seven siblings, Betty Naico and husband Bob of Essex, IA, David Grebert and wife Connie of Clarinda, IA, Nancy Christensen and husband Don of Atlantic, IA, Judy Graham and husband Tom of Essex, IA, Susie Grebert and Dennis Grebert and wife Tammy all of Shenandoah, IA and Ronnie Grebert and wife Kim of Clarinda, IA; two step-grandchildren, Tanner Marriott of Braddyville, MO and Matt Marriott of Vandelia, MO; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Essex, Iowa with Pastor Jerry Lamb and Rev. Rick Sleyster officiating. Serving at the memorial register were June McClintock and Kathy Allely, while Debbie Alexander cared for the flowers. Ushers for the services were Larry McClintock, Tommy Graham and Mike Allumbaugh. Judy Lundgren served as the organist while "The Cowboy Band" provided the special music for the service. Casket Bearers included; Kris Grebert, Greg Graham, Craig Johnson, Randy Gray, Steve Vojcheohoske, Rodney Naico, Roy Herald and Terry Stanton. Honorary Casket Bearers included Dr. Gerald Miller, Mike Allumbaugh, Matthew Marriott, Tanner Marriott, Dave Baker, Max Cumming and Kevin Naico. A private family burial followed in the Essex Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Williams-Jobe American Legion, Sidney, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Williams-Jobe American Legion-Sidney, Iowa Rodeo.
